Over the last four decades, Anne Nugent Guignon, RDH, MPH has been internationally recognized for her numerous contributions to dental hygiene, education, and philanthropic endeavors. From an experience of her own professional pain, she began to speak up and deliver her message of hope through education, believing that everyone deserves to be happy, healthy, and thriving. It was incredibly disturbing to her that hygienists were experiencing emotional and physical pain in the workplace, and because of her dynamic energy and passionate message, hygienists all over the country and beyond have begun to embrace the ownership of their careers, finding health and happiness in a fulfilling profession.
Anne has never forgotten her roots and her first love, which is why she continues to be a practicing clinician. She is also a prolific author with over 230 publications including feature articles and her monthly column for RDH Magazine,as well as two textbook chapters which are the result of her experience as a researcher and award-winning educator. She is an in-demand speaker who has presented over 400 programs throughout the United States and Canada on a wide range of subjects including ergonomics, the oral microbiome and biofilm, power-driven scaling, erosion, hypersensitivity and remineralization. In 2015 she was awarded the Certified Speaking Professional credential, the National Speakers Association’s highest earned certification.
Since 2007, Anne has continued to live out her dedication to education with her adjunct faculty position at the University of Texas Dental School. She was honored as the 2004 Philips RDH Mentor of the Year, and received the 2009 ADHA Colgate Irene Newman Award for professional achievement in advancing the art and science of dental hygiene. In 2012, she was nominated for the CNN Home Town Hero Award and recognized by DPR (Dental Products Report) as one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry. In 2016, RDH Magazine readers gave Anne their Most Effective Educator Award.
Anne’s heart to serve and give back is a theme woven into everything she does. Throughout her career, she has raised over $35,000 to help dental hygienists in need due to natural disasters or illness as well as other numerous charitable endeavors and association projects. Through her own personal outreach project, Just Add Water, she and her organization also provide 300 hygiene kits monthly to homeless men, women, and children, as well as clothing and hygiene supplies for battered women and undocumented workers.
